Exempli gratia

Jump to navigation Jump to search

exempli gratia or e.g. is the abbreviation for the Latin phrase exempli gratia, meaning “for example.” This abbreviation is typically used to introduce one or more examples of something mentioned previously in the sentence and can be used interchangeably with “for example” or “such as.” The use of e.g. implies that there are other examples not mentioned in the list. Here are some examples:

“The Federation is composed of a variety of member species (e.g., Humans, Vulcans, and Andorians).”

“Many genes are involved in neural tube development, e.g., Sonic Hedgehog, BMPs, and the Hox genes.”

Note: because e.g. implies that other examples are being omitted, do not use etc. in the same list.
