Federation Stock Number

(Redirected from Fleet Stock Number)

A Federation Stock Number, or Fleet Stock Number (FSN) as it is most commonly known termed within Starfleet, is a 14-digit numeric code, identifying all the 'standardized material items of supply' as they have been recognized by all Federation members including Starfleet. Under the standardization agreements by the UFP, the FSN has come to be used by all treaty members the use of FSNs are the cornerstone of the Starfleet Codification System (SCS).

While United Federation of Planets (UFP) membership is not required to utilize or participate in the SCS, many other interstellar societies use the FSN program but are not members of Starfleet, e.g. Ferengi Alliance, Orion Colonies and the First Federation. A three-digit Material Management Aggregation Code (MMAC) suffix may also be appended, to denote asset end use but it is not considered part of the FSN. In the Vulcan system it is known as a Material Management Code (MMC).

An item having an FSN is said to be "stock-listed" even though it may actually be an item which is only stored within a replication system record, to be replicated on demand.

Structure[edit | edit source]

The 14-digit alphanumeric FSN codes are created by the various Federation Codification Bureaux to designate unique items of supply. The FSN consists of two main sections, the Federation Supply Classification Group (FSCG) and the Starfleet Item Identification Number (SIIN):

Federation Supply Classification Group (FSCG)[edit | edit source]

The FSCG, utilizes a four-digit coding structure. The first two digits of the code number identify the group, and the last two digits of the code number identify the classes within each group.

These are organized using a four digit code that relates to group and class of an item:

The first two digits in example above (shown in purple) are the Federation Supply Group (FSG) which identifies by title, the commodity area covered by classes within the group.

The second two digits (shown in red) Federation Supply Class identifies the class of an item with its group. The class covers a relatively homogeneous area of commodities, in respect to their physical or performance characteristics, or in the respect that the items included therein are such as are usually requisitioned or issued together, or constitute a related grouping for supply management purposes.

Starfleet Item Identification Number (SIIN)[edit | edit source]

The last ten digits of the FSN comprise the Starfleet Item Identification Number (SIIN) and are typically hyphenated as shown in the example below. This format improves readability but is optional as SIINs are sometimes listed without hyphens. All interoperable data sequencing does not include any hyphens, flashes or spaces within the FSN.

The first three digits of the SIIN (the group shown in orange) are the FCB Code, which is used to identify which entity was the first to codify the item–i.e. which one first recognized it as an important item of supply. This is usually the member of origin, which typically means the Federation member of final design or manufacture.

FCB is short for Federation Codification Bureau which is the organization–typically a government agency of a Federation member–in charge of maintaining the NCS database within a given Federation entity.

The remaining seven characters are a non-significant identification number (actually code, as some of these characters may be alphanumeric, although in most cases SIINs are strictly numeric).

The first members to receive FCB code numbers were the Vulcan (100 and 101), Alpha Centauri (012), Andoria (013) and Tellar Prime (014) - as they had already been involved in the program when it codified. Starfleet was assigned the FCB code (011) for its items as it was the next number available after the 000 to 010 block set aside for the Sol System's own use.

Vulcan received (100) and (101) because it was already supplying items for Earth before the Federation's founding and the other founding member FCB codes were sequentially assigned as backfill numbers. The Vulcan number 100 was for old/current items of supply and 101 is for new items after the system's codification.
